A young woman walked in, and Pete’s attention immediately sharpened. She couldn’t have been more than twenty-five, with a shock of purple hair cut in an asymmetrical style that left one side of her head nearly shaved. Multiple piercings lined her ears, and a small diamond stud glinted from her nose. She wore black jeans, combat boots, and a leather jacket despite the mild temperature. But what caught Pete’s attention wasn’t her appearance—it was how the room subtly shifted when she entered.
Several patrons glanced up, then quickly looked away. A group of college-aged kids in the corner straightened slightly, one of them nodding almost imperceptibly in her direction. The barista who had served Pete gave her a chin-up greeting that seemed more deferential than friendly.
The woman—Zipper, Pete was increasingly certain—didn’t order. Instead, she walked directly to a table in the back where a young man in a Peninsula College sweatshirt sat alone. Their conversation was brief. She slid something across the table; he passed her what looked like cash. The entire transaction took less than thirty seconds.
Pete waited until she left the coffee shop before making his move. He followed at a distance, watching as she walked to a motorcycle parked half a block away—a sleek black Kawasaki with custom purple detailing that matched her hair.
As she was putting on her helmet, Pete approached, making sure to stay in her line of sight. No sense startling someone next to a running motorcycle.
“Excuse me,” he called, holding up his badge just enough to identify himself without making a scene. “Mind if I ask you a few questions?”
The woman’s posture changed instantly—shoulders ten-sing, weight shifting to the balls of her feet. For a moment, Pete thought she might try to flee, but instead she relaxed into an exaggerated slouch, her expression sliding into practiced boredom.
“What’s up, officer?” she asked, her voice carrying just enough edge to make the question sound like a challenge.
“Deputy,” Pete corrected mildly. “Deputy Schneider, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. And you are?”
“In a hurry,” she replied, securing her helmet strap. “Got somewhere to be.”
“This won’t take long. I’m investigating a series of overdoses in the county. Blue pills, victims conscious but non-responsive. Ring any bells?”
Something flickered across her face—too quick to identify, but definitely a reaction. “Sounds like bad news, but I don’t know anything about it. I don’t do drugs, Deputy.”
“I didn’t say you did,” Pete said, taking a step closer. “But people around here seem to know who you are. They call you Zipper, right?”
Her eyes narrowed slightly. “Some people call me that.”
“And what do other people call you?”
A pause. “Elizabeth Pierce. But I prefer Zipper.”
Pete nodded, making a mental note of the name. “Well, Ms. Pierce, I’ve got witnesses placing someone matching your description selling blue pills in Port Hadlock and Port Townsend over the past few weeks. Pills that have been linked to at least four medical emergencies in the last seven days.”
“Sounds like you’ve got witnesses with bad eyesight,” she said, her tone flat. “I sell vintage clothing online. Check my Etsy shop if you don’t believe me.”
