Russian strikes in Ukraine hit Kyiv and kill two in Odesa | BBC News
Russia has launched one of its largest strikes on Kyiv, injuring four people and causing widespread damage across seven of the capital’s ten districts, officials said.
Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched 315 drones overnight across the country.
Further south in the port city of Odesa, two people were killed after drone attacks hit residential buildings and medical facilities, including a maternity ward, officials said. Zelensky later said 13 people had also been injured there.
The overnight attack was “one of the largest strikes on Kyiv”, Zelensky said on social media.

A US-Iran agreement to extend the ceasefire between the two countries has been signed and is now in effect.
President Donald Trump formally signed the deal – which is set to reopen the Strait of Hormuz – while attending the G7 summit in France.
The 14-point agreement says that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, and also commits a $300bn fund for the “reconstruction and economic development” of the country – although the US is not required to contribute.

A train driver was killed and 100 people injured when two East Midlands Railway services to London St Pancras collided near Bedford on Friday.
Eleven people were very seriously injured, a further 32 were described as injured and 57 had minor injuries, the East of England Ambulance Service confirmed.
Speaking near the scene on Saturday, Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi of British Transport Police said the crash was being investigated and asked people to refrain from speculating about what happened, adding that the force’s deepest condolences were with the driver’s family, his friends, and his colleagues.

Iran closes Strait of Hormuz, accusing US and Israel of violating ceasefire deal | BBC News
Iran has said it is closing the Strait of Hormuz and accuses the US and Israel of violating the ceasefire deal, after Israel continued strikes on Lebanon.
The news comes as roughly two dozen people were reportedly killed by Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon, less than 24 hours after a new ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was announced.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei says his country’s attendance at talks in Switzerland will be aimed at “demanding that the other side fulfil its commitments”.
US Vice-President JD Vance tells Fox News that the Strait of Hormuz remains fully open, after being asked about reporting in the Wall Street Journal suggesting the Iranian navy were turning away ships.

Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister.
Speaking outside number 10 on Monday morning the prime minister said he accepted that his party does not believe he is best placed to lead the country at the next general election. In an emotional speech he also thanked his wife and said he wanted to be the “best dad I can to my beautiful children”.
Meanwhile, Andy Burnham has arrived in Westminster to be sworn in as the new MP for Makerfield. Burnham has confirmed he’ll stand to replace Starmer, and is currently the only candidate after Wes Streeting announced he was now backing Burnham.
