Of the greatest lich who ever lived, only a withered left hand and a single eye remained, and even as a god, Vecna is still missing them. This long, quiet journey follows those two relics from a single rumour in a 1976 supplement through every edition of Dungeons & Dragons. We visit the fisherman Gisel, the outlaw Mace who called himself Vecna the Second, the entombed warlord Halmadar, and the betrayer Kas and his sword. Along the way we trace how the relics shaped Greyhawk, the Forgotten Realms and the wider multiverse, and why only one ending is written for them.

He was just supposed to stay for a while.

Oliver has been doing fine on his own — healing quietly from a past betrayal, protecting his heart, keeping his feelings locked away. When his uncle calls asking if Tyler can come stay in the city, Oliver says yes without hesitation.

Tyler is family. Simple.

But nothing stays simple.

From the first night they share a room, something shifts. Late-night conversations. Morning coffee. Stolen glances across the couch. Tyler feels it immediately — and it terrifies him just as much as it confuses him.

They’re not related by blood. But the world won’t care about that.

And Oliver has already been burned once by love.

When Tyler finally says the words out loud — everything changes. Oliver must choose between the fear that’s kept him safe… and the love standing right in front of him.

Some feelings you can’t run from forever.

In the year 536 the sun rose over Europe and the Mediterranean and gave its light without its heat. A Byzantine historian wrote that it looked like the moon, and a Roman senator that it had turned bluish and that shadows barely fell at midday. Tonight we sit inside that year and the cold century after it: three eruptions within roughly a decade, a failure of bread in Ireland, yellow dust falling like snow in China, tree rings narrowing together in Irish oak and in pines on the far side of the world, and a plague that reached Constantinople in 542.

Then the slower part. Grey light over thin harvests, halls in Sweden falling in on themselves, gold buried by people who never came back for it, and a world that did not end but grew smaller and quieter for more than a hundred years.

Slow narration, no music that swells, and no advert breaks after the first half hour. Headphones optional. Staying awake is not required.

A NOTE ON WHAT IS STILL ARGUED ABOUT
The largest open question in this episode is how many people the plague of Justinian killed. The older account, resting mainly on Procopius, puts it at a quarter to a half of the Byzantine population, which works out to fifteen to one hundred million dead across the wider Mediterranean. In 2019 Mordechai and Eisenberg argued that those figures come from a narrow set of written sources, and that coins, papyri, pollen and burials show nothing like that scale of collapse. Both positions are still defended, so this episode gives no death toll. The volcano behind 536 is also unconfirmed: glass in a Swiss ice core points tentatively to Iceland, a North American source has not been ruled out, and only the eruption of 539 or 540 is traced with fair confidence, to Ilopango in El Salvador. How much of the century’s contraction belongs to the cold and the plague, rather than to trends already under way, remains a judgement and not a measurement.

ABOUT THESE EPISODES
I research and write every script myself and check the facts against published sources before recording. The narration is generated from my script using a licensed synthetic voice. The images are still illustrations, generated one at a time and selected by hand. If I have something wrong, tell me in the comments and I will pin the correction.
