A rapid new test for brain tumours can slash the time it takes for an accurate diagnosis from up to eight weeks to two hours. It means surgeons can get results even while they are operating, and patients are spared weeks of uncertainty whilst being able to start their treatment sooner. Health workers have called it “a huge leap forward for patients” that will “completely transform” how brain tumours are diagnosed

Iran’s Foreign Minister, at the United Nations in New York, says mediators have submitted a new plan to the White House, that would pave the way for the Strait of Hormuz to reopen within a week.

The Strait is a key waterway through which twenty percent of the world’s oil supplies passed, before the war. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that talks with the US on other issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, would start afterwards.

Residents of a village in Oxfordshire have voted to become independent from the UK in a symbolic referendum held in protest at plans to house more than 1,000 migrants at a former military base.

Villagers in Piddington, near Bicester, voted on Tuesday over Home Office proposals to house up to 1,256 male asylum seekers at nearby MoD Bicester.

The 350 residents were invited to cast their ballot in a small box outside the village hall, the community hub of Piddington.

Services provided by state-owned telecoms operator Ethio Telecom have been completely cut, although those from the much smaller private firm Safaricom remain operational.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks earlier posted on X that network data indicated a sub-national internet shutdown in northern Tigray.

Clashes between Tigrayan forces and their allies and Ethiopia’s federal troops broke out on Wednesday, prompting heightened tension and reports of panic buying.

During the two-year civil which ended in 2022, Tigray was totally cut off from the outside world.

Limited access to cash, food and medicine pushed hundreds of thousands into famine-like conditions.

The BBC has contacted Ethiopian authorities for comment.
