India’s credit ecosystem has expanded in scale. But the next phase is being shaped by how credit is accessed, used and managed.

The report points to several structural shifts:
– Consumption loans now feature in the wallets of 51% of credit-active consumers, up from 34% in March 2017.
– Business-oriented credit participation has grown significantly, with the number of credit-active consumers in this segment increasing 10x since 2017.
– The share of leveraged-consumer originations, after rising to 18% in FY24, moderated to 15% in FY26, indicating signs of stabilization.

Together, these shifts reflect a credit ecosystem that is not only growing in reach, but also evolving in structure and behavior.
