Synopsis:
The two-man Laurel and Hardy Zoot Suit Band find themselves fronting a scam for “gasoline pills” in wartime oil-short America. They are however soon on the side of the angels helping recover $10,000 for an attractive young lady whose family have themselves been swindled.

Compared to some of their contemporaries the films of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy represent a lighter, gentler variety of comedy. Even if the humor is less robust than that of their kin, however, the laughs are still plentiful, and the picture never leaves us with anything less than a consistent smile on our faces. As we’ve seen before and elsewhere, such fare may vary with regards to how much plot there is, contrasted with a thin through-line that’s really just an excuse for gags. Mark ‘Jitterbugs’ as the type of feature that peppers its length with regular dashes of cleverness – some physical humor, situational comedy, sight gags, witty dialogue – amidst unexpectedly substantial plot. The result is a title of a little more focus and a smidgen less abject frivolity as two naïve buffoons unwittingly get drawn into the shenanigans of con artists, yet it remains highly enjoyable from top to bottom and is well worth the small amount of time that it takes to watch.
