UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has told Parliament the UK would ban the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the illegally occupied West Bank.

In the speech, he said the UK government “agrees” there is ethnic cleansing in areas of the West Bank, and that the Israeli government is turning a “blind eye”. Israel has responded by closing the British consulate in Jerusalem and banning 11 left-wing MPs from entering the country.

Images have shown passengers sleeping on airport floors as more than 300 flights were cancelled on Wednesday after Tuesday’s technical problem at air traffic control.

Some 1,750 flights were cancelled on Tuesday, according to aviation analytics firm Cirium, with hundreds of thousands of passengers affected by the chaos.

Nats, the air traffic control provider, has apologised for the issue – the firm’s boss Martin Rolfe says there will be an investigation.

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s spokesman says the government has confidence in Rolfe and they’re expecting to see a report into the issue in a week’s time.

On Tuesday, the UK government announced sweeping sanctions against Israeli settlements in the West Bank, and accused settlers of ‘ethnic cleansing.’

Soon after, 11 other countries, including Canada, France, Spain and Poland, announced a ban on goods imported from illegal settlements.

In response, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said there would “without a doubt” be a reaction from the US, adding that the move could have a “huge economic impact on British businesses.”
