The character was created under the supervision of director Frank Capra, with many of the shorts written by Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss), Philip D. Eastman, and Munro Leaf. The animations were directed by notable figures such as Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng, Bob Clampett, and Frank Tashlin, and voiced by Mel Blanc .
Designed to instruct service personnel on topics like security, proper sanitation habits, and booby traps, the shorts used humor and irony to demonstrate the negative consequences of doing things incorrectly. For instance, in “Private Snafu vs. Malaria Mike,” Snafu neglects to take his malaria medications or use repellent, leading to his downfall .
