South African refugee says ‘I didn’t come to US for fun’ | BBC News
South African Charl Kleinhaus had defended his new US refugee status in a BBC interview, saying he fled his Mpumalanga farm after death threats.
He is one of 59 Afrikaners who are being resettled in the US under a controversial Trump administration policy. President Donald Trump said the Afrikaners were victims of “racial discrimination”.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has called them “cowards” who do not merit refugee status.
Kleinhaus has also come under scrutiny over antisemitic comments on social media that have since been deleted. He spoke to the BBC’s Nomia Iqbal.

ICE agents kill two men in a week in Maine and Texas | BBC Americast
In the space of one week, two men have been fatally shot by ICE agents in two different states. With limited footage of the incidents and suggestions that neither men were the initial targets of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, protesters are calling for investigations into their deaths.
The deaths of Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Maine – a 26-year-old Colombian national authorised to work in the US – and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston – a Mexican national who worked in the country as a builder for three decades – have sparked protests and calls for ICE to change how they operate.
Donald Trump has also weighed in, defending ICE agents on Truth Social, saying they are ‘doing a GREAT job’ and shouldn’t change how they apprehend suspects driving vehicles. But will these incidents have any impact on the administration’s immigration policies, particularly with midterm elections in November?
In this episode, Justin, Sarah and Anthony also discuss how the incidents in Maine and Houston are resurfacing questions about the progress of investigations into the shootings of US citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti by ICE agents earlier this year.

Why Zelensky faces protests in Ukraine | Global News Podcast
Thousands of people across Ukraine have taken part in protests against the government of President Volodymyr Zelensky after the defence minister Mykhaylo Fedorov – a popular young politician who championed Kyiv’s pivot to drone warfare – was removed from his post.
This comes just days after a violent confrontation in the city of Lviv, where civilians reportedly clashed with draft officers over aggressive military recruitment methods. President Zelensky has been also under pressure to address corruption in Kyiv, after a string of allegations against high-ranking officials.
We ask BBC Monitoring’s chief analyst Vitaly Shevchenko how much support President Zelensky still enjoys in Ukraine, after more than four years of war – and whether his political career can last beyond the end of the conflict.
Ukrainian elections are suspended under martial law, which was declared after Vladimir Putin launched Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. President Donald Trump has criticised President Zelensky for not holding a vote – accusing him last year of being a dictator.

Argentina could face action over Falklands banner after beating England at World Cup | BBC News
Argentina face the prospect of disciplinary action from Fifa after their players celebrated the World Cup semi-final win against England with a banner in support of their country’s claims to the Falkland Islands.
The defending world champions produced a dramatic late comeback in Atlanta, scoring twice to defeat Thomas Tuchel’s side 2-1.
After the final whistle, Argentina players celebrated while holding a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, which translates as “The Falklands are Argentine”.
The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, remain the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina.
The two nations went to war over the group of islands, situated 300 miles off Argentina’s east coast, from April to June 1982. The 74-day conflict led to the deaths of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen. Three people from the islands also died.
In 2014, Fifa fined the Argentine Football Association £20,000 after its players held up a banner with the same message before a friendly against Slovenia.World football’s governing body said the gesture had breached rules on political action and team misconduct.
