Published

on

In this year’s Sustainability Trends Report, published today, we explore a world of geopolitical turmoil, fossil fuel shocks and growing climate disruption, but also one where the technologies needed to accelerate the transition are scaling and becoming more affordable.

Solar power is growing. Electric vehicles are reshaping transport. Clean energy investment is reaching new highs. And across many markets, the economics of the transition are becoming harder to ignore ⚑

But progress is not yet fast enough, or evenly shared. The challenge now is to build the grids, mobilise the capital and support the emerging economies that will shape the next phase of the transition.

21. Majapahit – Empire of the Islands

Published

on

Beneath the shade of an Indonesian teak forest, a great brick gateway stands in ruins…

In this episode, I want to tell the story of the Majapahit Empire of medieval Indonesia. I want to show how this empire of the islands grew up on the volcanic island of Java, and how it beat the odds to survive in a world of medieval superpowers. I want to show how Majapahit expanded its influence and dominion to other lands, and undertook voyages that have few precedents in history. And I want to show what happened to bring this empire of the islands finally crashing down…

Americans Used to Dress Up Everywhere β€” So Why Did That Stop?

Published

on

Americans once dressed up for almost everything β€” from grocery stores and baseball games to restaurants, workplaces, and airplane travel. Suits, dresses, polished shoes, hats, and carefully chosen outfits were once a normal part of everyday American life.

So what happened?

How did America go from a culture where formal clothing was expected in public to one where jeans, hoodies, sneakers, sweatpants, and athleisure became completely normal?

This documentary explores the fascinating history behind America’s shift from formal to casual clothing β€” from early 20th-century social expectations and Hollywood glamour to World War II, the counterculture of the 1960s, blue jeans, suburbanization, Casual Friday, Dockers, Silicon Valley, Steve Jobs, athleisure, smartphones, and the dramatic impact of the 2020 pandemic.

But this story isn’t simply about fashion.

It’s about changing American values, work, technology, freedom, individuality, social expectations, and the way ordinary clothing can reveal enormous changes happening inside a society.

Why did the suit stop being America’s everyday uniform?

Why did jeans go from workwear to mainstream fashion?

How did Casual Friday help transform the American workplace?

And why did comfort eventually become one of the most powerful forces shaping what Americans wear?

The answer is a story that took more than a century to unfold.

Watch until the end β€” because the history of what Americans wear may reveal much more about America itself than you ever expected.
