France’s latest art heist: the hunt for two missing Renoir paintings | BBC News
Two paintings by the impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir have been stolen from a museum in the south of France.
Two thieves broke into the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer early on Tuesday, seizing four paintings but dropping two of the works in the museum gardens as they escaped, local Mayor Bryan Masson said.
The paintings, each worth €9m (£7.7m; $10.4m), are the latest high-profile pieces to have been stolen in a string of recent heists in Europe which have thrust the security of art in galleries and museums into the spotlight.
One of the most high-profile was in October last year, when a brazen heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris saw France’s priceless crown jewels being stolen.

‘We should have escalated matters earlier’, Lucy Letby doctor says | BBC News
A senior doctor who tried to raise concerns about Lucy Letby with hospital managers has told the BBC he wishes that he and others “had been brave enough to follow our suspicions and escalate things to the police earlier”.
Consultant paediatrician Dr John Gibbs worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital throughout the period in 2015 to 2016 when Letby murdered seven babies, and attempted to murder seven more, on the neonatal unit.
He said that he accepted that consultants must bear “collective” responsibility for some of the failings identified in the report.

General Election 2019: Row over Labour’s ‘NHS for sale’ claim – BBC News
A row has broken out after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn claimed his party had obtained documents that show the NHS has formed part of talks with the United States about a trade agreement after Brexit. Mr Corbyn says the papers are ‘proof’ that the Conservatives would put the NHS at risk. But Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the claims were ‘nonsense’ — and the NHS would not be part of any trade talks.
Meanwhile in Scotland, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has launched the Scottish National Party’s manifesto. The SNP leader said the party promises to ‘escape Brexit and put Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands’.
BBC News at Ten coverage with Huw Edwards in the studio, Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg in Westminster, Scotland Editor Sarah Smith in Glasgow and Lorna Gordon in south-west Scotland.
