A top safety researcher at the AI giant Anthropic has warned that artificial intelligence is advancing so quickly, he believes there is a greater than 10% chance it “could kill all humans” within the next decade. Evan Hubinger made the comments in a post on X, responding to a colleague who had quit Anthropic. That colleague, Jacob Coxon, wrote that “no other human activity poses this level of danger”.

US President Donald Trump said he would offer every adult American a $5,000 (£3,700) payout if Republicans win both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections – a plan that would cost more than a trillion dollars.

The offer was made in a speech at the party’s first-ever convention in the middle of a US presidential term.

He gave no details on how it would work or be funded – saying only that the money would have to be spent in the US. Vice-President JD Vance has linked the plan to the revenue that Trump has raised from US tariffs on imported goods.

Democrats labelled it an “empty promise” and others questioned whether such a pledge was legal or feasible.

An artificial intelligence researcher who quit AI firm Anthropic has said people working on the technology were “genuinely frightened” about the speed of its advancements and what it could mean for humanity.

Jacob Coxon told the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg on Saturday about his viral resignation post in which he raised concerns about out-of-control AI.

“I believe that if we don’t slow down at the current rate of progress, there is a strong chance that we could all die in the immediate future,” he said.

His resignation comes amid growing safety concerns in the industry, including from his former boss, Anthropic head Dario Amodei, who in an essay argued for development to slow down.
