Former Kremlin advisor says ‘best possible outcome is Ukraine’s total capitulation’ | BBC News

Published

on

While US President Donald Trump pushes Russia and Ukraine for a ceasefire, influential voices in Moscow are calling on the Russian authorities to adopt a hard line.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested he is ready for a halt in fighting but says “there are nuances” – which he laid out talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff at the Kremlin on Thursday.

From the start of this war, Putin has demanded the “demilitarisation” of Ukraine, which is anathema to Kyiv and its allies.

The BBC’s Russia Editor Steve Rosenberg has been speaking to political scientist and former Kremlin advisor Sergey Karaganov.

South African judge and former UN human rights commissioner Navi Pillay has won the Nobel Peace Prize 2026.

Pillay has been recognised for her “efforts to promote peace and international law”, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

She has become the fifth South African winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, with former President Nelson Mandela among past winners.

In her impromptu acceptance speech at the International Nuremberg Principles Academy, Pillay said it’s appropriate she found out about winning the Nobel Prize while with friends and colleagues who support human rights.

Boris Johnson has “categorically” denied he was warned a drinks party in the No 10 garden risked breaking lockdown rules.

“Nobody warned me that it was against the rules,” the prime minister said.

Former aide Dominic Cummings says he warned the PM at the time, and has accused him of misleading MPs about it.

Pressure is now mounting on the prime minister and there are reports the target of 54 letters to trigger a vote of confidence will be met in the coming days.

Newsnight’s political editor Nick Watt reports. Kirsty Wark is joined by Conservative peer Lord Marland, Delyth Miles from Grassroots Conservatives and former Conservative cabinet minister David Gauke.
