Search and rescue teams are racing to find people missing at a collapsed shopping centre and a damaged paper factory after a strong earthquake hit south-western Japan.

The quake hit Kyushu island at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT) on Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands of people told to move to evacuation shelters. a tsunami warning was issued for Kyushu’s south-western coastlines, though it was later lifted.

The second floor at the Aeon Mall shopping center in Kashima Town collapsed, trapping people inside.

Tens of thousands of homes were left without power. Prime minister Sanae Takaichi said officials were evaluating reports of collapsed buildings, fires, damaged roads and bridges, and power outages. She urged residents to evacuate to safe locations and remain alert.

Shawn Seesahai, from Anguilla in the Caribbean, had moved to the UK with the dream of becoming an engineer.

Instead, the 19-year-old was murdered by two 12-year-old boys in an unprovoked attack in Wolverhampton.

The boys, who cannot be named because of their ages, are believed to be the youngest people to be convicted of murder since 1993.

The BBC has investigated Shawn’s murder, and has heard how the loss has impacted his family back in Anguilla, who described it as their “worst nightmare”.

More than 360,000 people have been evacuated across France and Spain as unprecedented wildfires continue to spread.

The French President Emmanuel Macron held crisis talks and said his country was facing its most difficult situation since the Second World War.

Firefighters are still struggling to control the fires, as a new heatwave is forecast to bring further hot, dry conditions that could help fuel the blaze.

The authorities are warning that a major fire which is now just 9 miles from Bordeaux could continue to burn for months.

In Spain, more than 60,000 people have been forced to flee their homes near the capital Madrid.
