Iran and the US appear to be returning to all-out war, after 10 nights of escalating US airstrikes, and growing Iranian reprisals.

The Pentagon has confirmed that almost 100 US service personnel have been injured in the conflict in the past fortnight, while three US soldiers have been killed.

Iran’s revolutionary guards have targeted US military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain and carried out more attacks on tankers in the strait of Hormuz. Commercial shipping through the key shipping lane has again come to a standstill, putting further pressure on global energy supplies.

Yemen’s Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have announced a maritime embargo against Saudi Arabia, further threatening transit of oil and natural gas.

Around 1.3 million children in England will be able to claim vouchers for free school meals during the summer holidays, following a campaign led by the Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford.

Ministers had previously said they would not agree to free school meals vouchers outside term time.

The prime minister Boris Johnson praised Mr Rashford’s “contribution to the debate around poverty”.

Scotland and Wales will also continue with a voucher programme while Northern Ireland is considering an extension.

US Central Command (Centcom) said the wave of strikes were “designed to continue degrading Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping” in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media reported that air defences were activated in the capital Tehran. Explosions were also reported in Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, and in Bushehr, home to Iran’s only nuclear power plant.

Iran, which has retaliated against the US and its Middle East allies, warned of reprisals after Donald Trump said the US would soon hit an underground nuclear site near Natanz.

Russia’s UN ambassador walked out of a security council meeting after the President of the European Council blamed the Russian invasion of Ukraine for causing the global food crisis.

European Council chief Charles Michel said during the meeting in New York that Russia was using food supplies as a ‘stealth missile’ against the developing world forcing people into poverty.

The Russian envoy Vasily Nebenzya has accused Mr Michel of spreading lies.
