Kemi Badenoch has called Andy Burnham “a Paddington Bear Prime Minister” as she hit out at the Labour leader.

Speaking at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, the Tory leader said: “There is no national security without economic security, and there is no economic security without national security. We cannot have one without the other. Labour do not understand this.”

Homeowners and buyers have been dealt another mortgage blow as the average five-year fixed rate hit six per cent for the first time in three years.

The rise comes as the number of cheaper mortgages has collapsed, with almost 1,500 deals priced below five per cent disappearing in just over a month.

More than 600 youths have been arrested after violent riots backed by senior far-left politicians erupted across France.

Secondary school students across the country have been taking to the streets in recent days to protest against overcrowded class sizes, heavy workloads and shortages of teaching staff.

Students had been seen blockading school gates and holding up placards during demonstrations, but Wednesday saw an “escalation of violence”, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said.

French authorities said a number of arson attacks and physical clashes had left dozens of security personnel injured.
