This is the story of Light Horse Harry Lee, the dashing Cavalier of the American Revolution, and how he helped win the War for American Independence through his command of Lee’s Legion. In this podcast about one of the American Revolution’s greatest military leaders, we tell the tale of how he developed his skills as a horseman and leader in his Leesylvania estate, studied the Classics at Princeton and won renown as a scholar, built himself into a brilliant cavalier of a military leader, and won great morale-boosting victories at Spread Eagle Tavern and Paulus Hook before masterminding a strategy that defeated Lord Cornwallis. He led with bravery before quitting in pique and marrying Matilda Lee of Stratford Hall before the conclusion of the war. And yes, I mispronounced Cannae around the 12:47 mark. I apologize.

Henry Lee III was born in 1756 at Leesylvania in Virginia as the eldest son of Henry Lee II and Lucy Grymes. Raised among the Virginia gentry, he learned riding, command, and social confidence from family life, estate management, and contact with local political leaders.
He entered Princeton in 1770, where he studied alongside such great contemporaries as James Madison and Aaron Burr while a student of Princeton, and he excelled in Latin, Greek, mathematics, history, and literature, and graduated in 1773 with a public oration and a reputation as both scholar and gentleman. At first Lee planned to study law in England, but in 1776 he received a commission as captain of the 5th Troop of Virginia Light Dragoons.

Lee organized his troop with unusual care, using family resources to equip it with fine horses and strict discipline. In winter 1778, his small command won fame at Spread Eagle Tavern near Valley Forge, where ten dragoons held off a much larger British cavalry force. In the wake of this morale-boosting victory, George Washington offered Lee a position as his aide de camp, but Harry Lee refused, saying he was “wedded to my sword.” Washington, who loved the young man, then helped secure him an independent partisan command, later known as Lee’s Legion. It specialized in raids, scouting, and surprise attacks in both the northern and southern campaigns, helping win the war by wearing down the British. In August 1779, Lee carried out a night assault on Paulus Hook, another great victory.

Sent south in 1780, Light Horse Harry Lee fought alongside General Greene and the famous Francis Marion, better known as “The Swamp Fox”, in the Carolinas and developed a strategy he compared to Scipio Africanus: bypass Lord Cornwallis, strike British posts in South Carolina, and cut off their support from Southern Tories. This approach helped Greene and Lee dismantle British control in the interior and support the path to Yorktown, helping win the American Revolution. By the end of the war, Lee was exhausted and bitter. He resigned in early 1782, married Matilda Lee of Stratford Hall, and became lord of the estate. This was his last moment of true triumph before the decline began.

In 2022, we observed a major shift in pop culture, one that was driven less and less by viral moments with mass appeal. Instead, we found that creators and their viewers were prioritizing personally relevant content that reflected their unique interests.

This year, we turned our focus to the rapid technological changes in creation and consumption that are enabling creators and their fans to put these individual perspectives front and center. For our latest report, we conducted surveys in 14 countries and analyzed hundreds of trends to better understand how creative tools are being used to offer new means of expression and produce moments that resonate in culture today.

We found that some key components are behind the moments that are breaking through: fandom becoming more multilayered, formats expanding, increased access to casual and experiential tools, and an explosion of AI-based technologies.

The many layers of Fandom
As the digital environment evolves, fandom is becoming more stratified, with new levels of participation enabling casual and superfans alike to express themselves online across multiple formats. And viewers are eager to consume this output: 47% of Gen Z have watched videos made by fans of specific content, artists, or public figures over the past 12 months.

Multiformat experiences
Key to this dimensionalized fandom is the growth of formats beyond long-form, most notably short-form but also livestreams and podcasts. Creators have embraced storytelling across these offerings, which lets audiences personalize their consumption even further: 87% of people have watched at least 4 of the content formats that YouTube offers over the past 12 months.

Casual & experiential tools
From remixing to clipping to filters and effects, there are more tools than ever before that let creators take part and lend their unique spin to moments as they happen. At the same time, audiences can tailor how they’re experiencing this content thanks to features like multi-language audio and new ways of using closed captions.

There have been more than 1.7 billion views of videos related to generative AI tools in 2023.
