LA fires still raging as National Guard and curfews deployed against looters | BBC News

Published

Firefighters are still struggling to contain the wildfires raging across Los Angeles for four days.

The US National Guard has been deployed and nightime curfews announced in some areas, to prevent looting. President Biden has said the city resembles a ‘war scene.’

Around 10 thousand homes and buildings have been destroyed. Early estimates suggest the cost of the damage may amount to $150 billion dollars.

Fire authorities are admitting they do not have enough resources to tackle the biggest wildfires ever seen in the Los Angeles area.

Powerful winds and parched ground after months with little rain have contributed o the disaster. Scientists studying climate change have confirmed that 2024 was the hottest ever recorded, with temperatures 1.6 degrees higher than the pre-industrial average.

Negotiators for the US and Iran have agreed a framework of a deal that would extend their ceasefire for 60 days and launch negotiations on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, US sources say.

The agreement comes amid continued strikes and accusations of ceasefire violations, with tensions still high across the region.

Talks are also said to include potential changes to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

Trump and Iran reach tentative deal | Global News Podcast

Published

on

More than three months after the US and Israel first began their war with Iran, Washington and Tehran have reached an initial agreement to bring about a more long-term end to hostilities.

US President Donald Trump has said it paves the way for what he called the “toll-free” opening of the Strait of Hormuz. He called on ships to start their engines and “let the oil flow”.

The full text of the deal has not yet been released. Pakistani mediators say the agreement will be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday 19 June.

Our US State Department correspondent Tom Bateman tells us that President Trump and Iranian officials are already giving different accounts of what’s been agreed.

#Belfast #NorthernIrelandTwelve police officers have been injured and 16 people arrested in the second night of rioting in Northern Ireland.

A water cannon was deployed to disperse a large crowd during the unrest prompted by a serious knife attack in Belfast on Monday.

The family of the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, said they did not want this “terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility,” and appealed for privacy.

Hilary Benn, the UK Northern Ireland secretary, said a sense of fear “has spread amongst ethnic minority people” in Northern Ireland after the nights of violence.

On Wednesday, a 30-year-old, originally from Sudan, appeared in court charged with attempted murder over a knife attack that caused serious injuries to the victim.
