LA fires burn out-of-control as thousands evacuated from homes | BBC News
Wildfires are ripping across parts of Los Angeles, leading to at least five deaths and burning down hundreds of buildings.
Nearly 180,000 LA residents have been told to evacuate and authorities say they’re doing what they can to ascertain if any more people have died.
The Palisades fire, one of the five still burning, is thought to be “one of the worst natural disasters in the history of LA” – it now covers covering 17,200 acres and is 0% contained.
Officials are hopeful that the “tide is turning”, with LA’s city fire chief saying winds – which helped the fires to spread – are forecast to “subside” today, and aerial firefighting allowed to resume.

Israeli strikes kill 11 people in Gaza City, medics say | BBC News
At least 11 Palestinians have been killed, including women and children, and dozens wounded in Israeli air strikes across Gaza City, according to medical sources and eyewitnesses.
Israeli aircraft struck at least four residential buildings in the Sheikh Radwan and Tel al-Hawa neighbourhoods and Shati refugee camp in the early hours of Thursday, causing powerful explosions and panic among residents.
Among videos posted on social media, said to be the aftermath of the attacks, were distressing images of people trying to leave a building engulfed in fire in Shati camp.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

Why Exmouth residents are suing South West Water | BBC News
Lawyers say nearly 2000 people across Devon and Cornwall have signed up to demand compensation from the local water company over sewage spills.
The group legal claim wants South West Water held responsible for occasions when raw sewage discharges prevented people using the sea and deterred tourists from using local businesses.
South West Water last year spilled sewage for more hours than any other English water company – more than 400,000 in total. It is also due to be sentenced after pleading guilty to repeated illegal sewage spills.
South West Water said it is aware of the legal claim and is currently investing £760m to reduce the amount of sewage it discharges.
