Language Trends Ireland Report Webinar 2025/26

Following the publication of the first Language Trends Ireland report, the British Council Ireland hosted a webinar highlighting key findings from the research. The presentation was followed by a roundtable discussion chaired by Vicky Gough, British Council Schools Adviser. The panel featured contributions from:

– Dr. Ian Colleen – Lead researcher and reader in Modern Languages Education, Queen’s University Belfast
– Karen Ruddock – Executive Director, Post-Primary Languages Ireland (PPLI)
– Kathy Jones, representing the National Association of Principals and Deputies and speaking in her role as a school principal
– Mairéad O’Driscoll, representing Foreign Language Teacher Professional Networks
– Professor Jennifer Bruen, Dublin City University, representing the higher education sector
– A student representative from Mount Carmel Secondary School

About the report :
The British Council’s Language Trends reports provide an overview of the state of Modern Foreign Languages across the UK and Ireland. Drawing on survey responses from school leaders and students, the research examines areas such as language provision in secondary schools, attitudes towards language learning, and the challenges faced within education systems. The reports aim to support teachers, school leaders, academics, inspectors and policymakers in making informed, evidence-based decisions about the future of language education.
