Why Russia opened fire near the British coast | Global News Podcast
A Russian warship carried out live-fire drills off the UK coast this week, in the latest instance of Moscow running military excercises near Nato territory. Last week, Poland scrambled fighter jets after Russian aircraft was spotted over the Baltic Sea. And the British government has said Russian submarines were seen near undersea cables and pipelines north of the UK earlier this year.
We ask Vitaly Shevchenko, chief analyst for BBC Monitoring, why the Kremlin is flexing its muscles so close to Nato countries, and how Europe views the threat of Russian aggression, more than four years after Vladimir Putin launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Police officer was violent rapist who attacked women over 14 years | BBC News
A police officer who took his own life in May was a violent rapist who carried out a spate of sexual attacks and attempted murders of women over at least 14 years, the BBC can reveal.
PC Alan Greer’s first known victim was a woman he raped in her home in Glasgow in 2012 after she had called the police to report being the victim of a crime.
The woman reported the sex attack by Greer late last year, sparking one of Police Scotland’s biggest ever anti-corruption inquiries.
Detectives have so far uncovered a further eight victims, five of whom were sex workers, attacked while Greer was off duty.

Why has UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham paused plans to release some prisoners early? BBC Newscast
Today, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced ‘no prisoners will be let out’ under early release scheme until he has conducted an ‘urgent review’.
The announcement comes after the widow of PC Andrew Harper described the possible early release of prisoners as ‘deplorable’, following reports that two of his killers could be freed early. Plus, in his third policy announcement in as many days, Andy Burnham announced a 20% cut to business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues in England from April. Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies Helen Miller and BBC Business Editor Simon Jack join Adam to discuss how the government plans to fund this cut and how ever-changing taxes affect business owners.

African camels are dying from high heat | BBC News
Camels – known for their resilience in the hottest and driest places on Earth- are falling victim to the climate crisis.
North Africa and the Horn of Africa are home to around 80% of the world’s largest population of camels with one hump. But, rising temperatures are fuelling disease and death.
Herders are reporting camels with blisters on their hooves and skin burned by the hot sand. They are also facing stress, fatigue, and dehydration.
While extreme heat is the primary culprit, its impacts become severe when other factors like loss of vegetation and water, lack of shaded areas and inadequate veterinary services add up, experts say.
