Large hadron collider upgrade ‘revolutionary’ – BBC News

Published

on

The large hadron collider, the world’s most advanced particle accelerator, has undergone a major revamp which scientists say could spark a physics revolution.

The vast machine, deep underground in the Swiss Alps, smashes atoms together to break them apart and discover what is inside them.

Since the upgrade, its instruments are more sensitive, allowing researchers to study the collision of particles from the inside of atoms in higher definition.

It means there’s now the best chance ever of the machine finding subatomic particles that are completely new to science.

The hope is that it will make discoveries that will spark the biggest revolution in physics in a hundred years.

The BBC’s science correspondent Pallab Ghosh reports.

BBC News goes undercover to expose legal advisers charging migrants thousands of pounds to fabricate immigration claims, giving them fake cover stories.

Some migrants are being encouraged to pretend to be gay to claim asylum. They are advised to gather untrue evidence including supporting letters and photos at LGBT events, for their applications.

Others are encouraged to make false allegations of domestic abuse.
The investigation finds advisers exploiting migrants and abusing safeguards designed to protect those truly at risk.

Why has the UK Government changed its approach to Israel? | BBC Newscast

Published

on

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has told Parliament the UK would ban the import of goods from Israeli settlements in the illegally occupied West Bank.

In the speech, he said the UK government “agrees” there is ethnic cleansing in areas of the West Bank, and that the Israeli government is turning a “blind eye”. Israel has responded by closing the British consulate in Jerusalem and banning 11 left-wing MPs from entering the country.

How much is this a change in UK policy toward Israel? Adam and Chris discuss with BBC international editor Jeremy Bowen.

Plus, a spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan say the couple were surprised to see a letter sent on behalf of King Charles clarifying they remained non-working royals after moving back to the UK. Royal correspondent Sean Coughlan is in the studio.
