Front-Page Ad Row #outrage After Major Daily Carries Defense #advert for Convicted Rapist #ramrahim

Published

on

A sharp debate on journalistic standards and public trust has erupted following The Hindu’s decision to carry a full-page front-page advertisement for Dera Sacha Sauda. The ad portrayed its leader, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh—who is currently serving a 20-year sentence for rape—in a favorable light by highlighting his organization’s welfare initiatives while framing his conviction as a conspiracy.

Despite carrying a standard disclaimer absolving the editorial team of responsibility, the publication met with swift backlash from media critics, journalists, and readers who argued that serious news institutions should not lend their front-page credibility to convicted individuals. The outcry eventually prompted the newspaper to issue an unconditional front-page apology, acknowledging the content as “deeply offensive”.

This incident raises fundamental questions about the boundaries of advertisement revenue and the duty of national dailies to uphold public trust over commercial gain. What are your thoughts on paid content vs. media ethics? Let us know in the comments below!
