Hyrox athlete who soiled herself admits putting others ‘at risk’ but backlash ‘traumatic’ | BBC News
An Australian athlete has admitted putting others at risk by continuing to race after soiling herself during an endurance sports event.
Speaking exclusively to the BBC ahead of her return to the sport, Joanna Wietrzyk suggested her determination to win the Hyrox race in Beijing in September had clouded her judgement: “It was my decision to continue racing so I take full responsibility for that”.
Challenged over why she carried on, she said: “I didn’t really think about those around me… the decision that I made in hindsight was the wrong decision and I’m truly sorry for everyone that I did affect.”
The 24-year-old said that the experience and subsequent backlash was “traumatic”. She also said she considered walking away from the sport.
Although initially appearing defiant in a now-deleted Instagram post, Wietrzyk apologised in the week after the Beijing event and said she would forfeit the win and retroactively withdraw from the race.

With most of the votes counted, Netanyahu’s bloc is slightly ahead – but neither it nor the opposition are on track for a majority.
Netanyahu is calling for a strong right-wing government and his party, Likud, is set to be the biggest.
His rival, Gadi Eisenkot insists Israel voted to end Netanyahu’s term.
Either way, it could take days or weeks before we know who will form the next governing coalition and the direction the country will go in from here.

Reporter ‘trapped’ on tea plantation in India – BBC News
The BBC’s South Asia correspondent, Justin Rowlatt encountered obstruction from management when he tried to access a tea plantation in India. Several of the world’s biggest tea brands including PG Tips, Lipton, Tetley and Twinings have said they will work to improve the tea estates they buy from in India after a BBC investigation found dangerous, disgusting and degrading living and working conditions. Harrods has stopped selling some tea products in response. The joint investigation by Radio 4’s File on Four and BBC News also found that some tea estates break the law by restricting public access to workers’ living areas.

Russian drone attack on Ukrainian train station kills at least 14 | BBC News
At least 14 people have been killed after a Russian jet-powered drone hit a crowded platform at the main railway station in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, local officials have said.
Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Hanzha said at least 14 others were wounded in the attack, including an 11-year-old boy.
Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, said a passenger train headed for the southern city of Zaporizhzhia was at one of the platforms in Dnipro when the drone hit.
Russia’s military has not publicly commented. It has repeatedly hit Ukraine’s large railway network, but Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians.
