At least 72 people killed in Spain floods | BBC News

Published

on

At least 72 people have died in the south-east of Spain, where flash flooding has caused “enormous destruction”.

Rescue teams are working to find those feared missing, but damage to infrastructure has made some communities hard to access.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez promised residents in affected areas that they would not be abandoned, and announced a three-day mourning period.

There has also been criticism of the civil protection agency – which is deployed during natural disasters – as it did not issue an alert until 20:15 local time on Tuesday, when the flooding had already caused a great deal of damage.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will not live in Buckingham Palace after renovations | BBC News

Published

on

King Charles and Queen Camilla will not live at Buckingham Palace when £369m of refurbishments are completed next year, the latest royal accounts have revealed.

The palace, which has served as the official London residence of the UK sovereign since 1837, will continue to be the administrative headquarters of the monarchy but the King has decided that nearby Clarence House will remain his official home.

The decision has partly been taken to allow greater public access to the landmark, officials said.

A 10-year refurbishment of Buckingham Palace – funded through a temporary increase in the Sovereign Grant, which pays for the official duties of the royals – is due to be completed in March.

Netanyahu orders closure of entire occupied West Bank after shooting | BBC News

Published

on

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the closure of the entire occupied West Bank and the cancellation of his party’s political events after a shooting.

Five Israelis were wounded and two suspected Palestinian attackers killed by Israeli security forces after a shooting near the city of Hebron, Israeli officials say.

The attack comes at a time of high tensions in the West Bank, with extremist Jewish settlers targeting Palestinians during the annual olive harvest, and Israel’s general election taking place in four days time.

The West Bank was already expected to be placed under lockdown for the election on Monday and Tuesday, according to Israeli media.
