Israel says Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s death not the end of the war in Gaza | BBC News
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the killing of Yahya Sinwar showed why Israel “insisted on not ending the war”, and added the fighting would continue until the remaining hostages were brought home.
Sinwar, who had been top of Israel’s most-wanted list, is a deeply significant moment in the war in Gaza.
Israel accused Sinwar of having masterminded the unprecedented 7 October attacks, that killed around 1,200 people in Israel and saw 251 taken hostage last year.
US officials have signalled a desire for Sinwar’s death to act as an opportunity to renew efforts to agree a ceasefire deal and secure the release of the remaining hostages.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the UN General Assembly “we have crushed Iran’s military”, after dozens of delegates left the chamber and refused to listen to his address.
In Washington, US President Donald Trump is hosting Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has asked him to return to the ceasefire agreed with Iran in June.
Meanwhile, Saudi-led forces have said the Iran-backed Houthis fired six missiles at two Saudi Arabian cities. And Iran has threatened to paralyse airports in neighbouring countries if they stop commercial Iranian flights in response to US aviation sanctions.

Manchester City have been found guilty of breaking the majority of the 115 financial rules they were accused of breaching, sources have told BBC Sport.
The Athletic is reporting that the sanctions have not been decided but that the independent panel has reached its decision, finding the club guilty of all but one count.
Sources have also told BBC Sport a decision has been made in the case, and City have been found guilty of the majority of breaches.
The Premier League declined to comment. Asked if the report was correct, City did not comment either way.
