Record silver ‘would be asking a lot’ says Mazumdar
Silver is showing torque with the metal having caught and surpassed gold’s gains this year, Joe Mazumdar, Editor of Exploration Insights told Kitco Mining’s Digging Deep.
The silver price recently hit a 10-year high of more than US$32/oz, having increased in value 32% this year, compared to gold’s 30% rise to an historically high level of almost $2,700/oz.
“Silver torque tends to happen later in the cycle, so I’m not surprised it’s catching up. … Silver peaked at about 64:1 in early 2021 and in the last few years, it’s settled at around 80-85:1. The hope is that contraction gets us back to maybe the seventies and that would push silver up even more and provide more torque,” said Mazumdar.
As to whether the silver price has another $20/oz in it to beat the $50/oz record it established in 2011, Mazumdar, said that would require unprecedented moves in the metal prices.
“For silver to get to about $50/oz, assuming that the gold-silver ratio doesn’t change, mean gold would be about $4,240/oz. If the gold price didn’t change, then the ratio would have to contract to 50-55:1. Over the last four to five years, it hasn’t been below 64:1, so that would be asking a lot,” said Mazumdar.
Mazumdar also spoke on the prospects for silver developers in Mexico under new president Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as in Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Nevada and British Columbia.
