Russian President Putin’s Kremlin targets LGBT community in new crackdown – BBC News
A crackdown against the LGBT+ community in Russia has intensified after a new law was passed by the Russian Parliament.
The bill, which passed in December, places restrictions on almost any mention of LGBT people or culture.
Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is not only fighting Ukraine on the battlefield, but also “Western” values.
During a speech in the Kremlin to mark the illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions, the president lashed out at the West and LGBT rights, calling them “pure Satanism”.

Joshua Wong, once the face of Hong Kong’s democracy movement, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for colluding with foreign forces under the city’s sweeping national security law.
Wong is among hundreds of campaigners and ordinary Hongkongers arrested under the law, which was imposed in 2020 following explosive pro-democracy protests against Beijing’s growing control.
Critics say the far-reaching law has silenced dissent, but authorities argue that it is needed to maintain stability and deny it has weakened the city’s cherished autonomy.
Having already spent the last six years in jail, Wong, who was due to be freed in January, will now spend another decade behind bars.

Ukraine and Russia are reporting cyber-attacks on their emergency alert apps, with fake warnings sent to users around the countries.
Ukraine was first to report problems, and for a short time the capital Kyiv was subject to a radiation threat, the Ukrainian Air Force has said.
A few hours later Russian authorities said its app was hacked, with a Ukrainian espionage group reportedly sending fake warnings of nuclear strikes inside Russia.
