Israel says troops enter Lebanon for ‘limited, targeted’ ground raids on Hezbollah | BBC News

Published

on

Israeli troops have entered Lebanon, in what the Israeli military calls a “limited, localised and targeted” ground operation against Hezbollah.

The Israel Defense Forces say the targets inside southern Lebanon pose “an immediate threat to Israeli communities”.

Israeli air strikes have continued overnight with the IDF saying it hit Beirut, while officials in Lebanon say a building in a Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon was hit.

On Monday, Hezbollah’s deputy leader Naim Qassem said the group was ready for an Israeli ground offensive and that the battle “may be long”.

In Lebanon, officials say more than 1,000 people have been killed in the past two weeks, while up to a million may now be displaced.

At least 19 killed in Israeli strike on Gaza ‘safe zone’ for displaced people | BBC News

Published

on

At least 19 people have been killed in an Israeli strike in the designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza, according to Hamas-run health ministry.

The blasts destroyed an area crowded with tents for displaced Palestinians in al-Mawasi, south-west of Khan Younis, leaving huge craters in the sand.

Al-Mawasi has been crammed with Palestinians living in tents since the Israeli army designated the coastal area a “safe zone” during its ground invasions of Khan Younis and Rafah.

The Israeli military said its aircraft attacked what it called “a number of senior Hamas terrorists” operating there, a claim Hamas denied.

Hundreds of thousands of people have sought shelter in the humanitarian zone along Gaza’s southern Mediterranean coast, after being ordered by the Israeli military to evacuate there for their own safety over the past 11 months.

Fiona Bruce presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lucy Williamson.

Why the New York primary matters – BBC News

Published

on

The eyes of the US political world are on New York, and Republicans and Democratic presidential contenders have been campaigning hard. With hundreds of delegates up for grabs between the two parties, the vote is important for front-runner Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, who want to pull away from their rivals.
But it’s not the biggest state up for grabs this election, nor will it clinch a party nomination for any of the candidates. So why does it matter? The BBC’s Anthony Zurcher takes a look. Video by Olivia Lace-Evans.
