Testimony from frontline of Sudan’s civil war | BBC News

Published

Sudan is at breaking point.

After 17 months of a brutal civil war which has devastated the country, the army has launched a major offensive in the capital Khartoum, targeting areas in the hands of its bitter rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

The RSF seized most of Khartoum at the start of the conflict, while the army controls the twin city of Omdurman, just across the River Nile.

But there are still places where people can, and do, cross between the two sides.

The BBC’s Barbara Plett-Usher reports from Sudan.

Saudia Arabia vows ‘serious response’ to Houthi attacks and other stories | Global News Podcast

Published

The Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen have continued to fire missiles towards Saudi Arabia, after a number of deadly attacks on Riyadh’s main international airport.

Almost all flights to and from the airport have been suspended. The Houthis say their actions are in retaliation for “brutal Saudi aggression” against areas they control in western Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s energy minister Prince Abdul Aziz bin Salman told a conference in Riyadh that the seriousness of the attacks required an equally serious response from the Kingdom.

Case of alleged gang rape at Cornell University in US reopened | BBC News

Published

on

New York state prosecutors say they will reopen a criminal inquiry into the alleged rape of a woman at Cornell University in 2024.

The woman filed a civil lawsuit on 16 September alleging she was drugged and raped by multiple people at a fraternity house at the university.

“Once we determine the appropriate charges, the case will be prosecuted in the most objective and impartial means possible” through a grand jury, Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said Monday.

Cornell University said that while it supported the case being brought before a grand jury, “any suggestion that the university did not impose consequential punishments for those involved is false”.
