Thousands turn out for funeral of murdered Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei | BBC News

Published

on

Thousands of mourners have gathered for the funeral of Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei.

The athlete died after being set on fire by her former boyfriend, and has now been buried in her father’s homestead in eastern Uganda.

As she was also a member of Uganda’s armed forces, soldiers carried the coffin and gave a three-volley salute at the service.

Dickson Ndiema attacked Cheptegei with petrol just under a fortnight ago outside her home in neighbouring north-west Kenya, close to where she trained.

The 33-year-old’s killing, and its brutal nature, left her family distraught and shocked many others across the world.

Trump cancels Iran strikes subject to deal being made ‘rapidly’ | BBC News

Published

on

Donald Trump says he has cancelled strikes against Iran, provided a deal is struck “rapidly” with the country.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president said he had been asked by Iran and other countries in the Middle East to “hold off” on any attack as the “perimeters” of a deal had been agreed.

Trump’s comments came after reports that the US and Israel may have been planning new, intense strikes on Iran.

Israel rejects Trump’s 15-point plan for Gaza, Netanyahu says | BBC News

Published

on

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected US President Donald Trump’s 15-point plan for Gaza, saying there will be no military withdrawal until Hamas is “genuinely” disarmed.

Trump’s Board of Peace said last month that it had reached an agreement for the “complete disarmament” of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza.

However, Hamas said it would surrender its heavy weapons only if Israel ended “all forms of aggression” and withdrew its forces from the territory.

“Israel rejects the 15-point document,” Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting on Sunday.

The decision is another setback for Trump’s peace initiative for Gaza, which was announced in September last year.
