Lockdown could be eased early says UK scientific adviser- BBC News
The success of the vaccination programme has made it possible to consider lifting the Covid restrictions at an earlier stage, according to one of the government’s scientific advisors.
Professor Mark Woolhouse told a parliamentary committee at Westminster that there were reasons to be more optimistic because there was more confidence in the scientific data compared to last year.
But other government advisers sounded a far more cautious note. And the prime minister Boris Johnson said he was taking a “data not dates’ approach which would “go in stages”.
Meanwhile In the first trial of its kind in the world dozens of young and healthy volunteers between 18 and 30 years of age will be exposed to the coronavirus in a safe, controlled environment.
The study will begin in the UK following approval from the clinical trials ethics body. Scientists hope it will give them a deeper understanding of the virus.

A 23-year-old Utah man has pleaded not guilty to the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk – as a judge ruled prosecutors can seek the death penalty at trial.
Tyler Robinson denies aggravated murder, a capital offence in Utah, and six other charges in connection with the shooting of Kirk at a campus event on 10 September 2025.
Defence lawyers had tried to have the death penalty taken off the table, but prosecutors argued that aggravating factors, such as firing into a crowd in the presence of children, warranted a capital trial.
Turning Point USA co-founder Kirk, 31, was shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem.

Hundreds of people have become ill with salmonella linked to imported eggs, say UK authorities, who say they have identified two new clusters of the infection.
Some of the cases date back a year, but all involve bacteria that are almost genetically identical, suggesting a common food source.

Apple has renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America on its Maps app, after an order from US President Donald Trump.
It’s all part of Washington’s trade row with Canada.
The change was made for US-based users – those in Canada will continue to see Lake Ontario displayed. The BBC has contacted Apple for comment.

Iran has launched missile and drone attacks at US targets across the Middle East, after American forces resumed strikes against Iran.
It comes after the Iranian Red Crescent said four people – including a child – were killed at a wedding celebration when shrapnel from a US missile hit a house in southern Iran.
Iranian media initially said five people had been killed.
The US military says it is aware of the reports but that it never targets civilians, and was striking Iranian targets in response to “recent attempted” Iranian attacks.
