Fears grow of wider war as Israel sends more troops to Lebanon border | BBC News
Fears are growing of all-out conflict between Israel and Lebanon, as Israel’s defence minister said his country was “opening a new phase in the war” and more troops were sent to the border. Yoav Gallant said the “centre of gravity is shifting to the north”.
His warning came hours after a new wave of explosions killed 14 people and injured at least 450 across Lebanon when walkie-talkies exploded, according to the country’s health ministry. That came a day after exploding pagers killed 12 people in Lebanon including two children and left almost 3,000 people in hospital.
Multiple sources said that Mossad, the Israeli spy agency, was targeting Hezbollah fighters and had managed to place explosives in the electronic devices. Israel has declined to comment on those claims and the United States declared that it had no prior knowledge of the attacks.
The defence minister’s announcement suggests that Israel is shifting its focus towards its conflict with Hezbollah – the Iran-backed group based in Lebanon. Around 60,000 people have been displaced in the north of Israel due to rocket and drone attacks by Hezbollah since the October 7th attacks in Israel and the war in Gaza. Thousands of people in Lebanon have been killed and injured by Israeli attacks.

Negotiators for the US and Iran have agreed a framework of a deal that would extend their ceasefire for 60 days and launch negotiations on the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, US sources say.
The agreement comes amid continued strikes and accusations of ceasefire violations, with tensions still high across the region.
Talks are also said to include potential changes to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy route.

More than three months after the US and Israel first began their war with Iran, Washington and Tehran have reached an initial agreement to bring about a more long-term end to hostilities.
US President Donald Trump has said it paves the way for what he called the “toll-free” opening of the Strait of Hormuz. He called on ships to start their engines and “let the oil flow”.
The full text of the deal has not yet been released. Pakistani mediators say the agreement will be officially signed in Switzerland on Friday 19 June.

Twelve police officers injured and water cannon fired after second night of NI riots | BBC News
#Belfast #NorthernIrelandTwelve police officers have been injured and 16 people arrested in the second night of rioting in Northern Ireland.
A water cannon was deployed to disperse a large crowd during the unrest prompted by a serious knife attack in Belfast on Monday.
The family of the victim, Stephen Ogilvie, said they did not want this “terrible tragedy to be used to divide people or fuel hostility,” and appealed for privacy.
Hilary Benn, the UK Northern Ireland secretary, said a sense of fear “has spread amongst ethnic minority people” in Northern Ireland after the nights of violence.
On Wednesday, a 30-year-old, originally from Sudan, appeared in court charged with attempted murder over a knife attack that caused serious injuries to the victim.
