The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving | Full Audiobook for Halloween

Published

on

A complete, unabridged audiobook of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving (1820), read in English by Bob Neufeld. Turn down the lights on Halloween night and listen to the original American ghost story, about one hour and twenty-one minutes of reading after a short on-screen introduction.

About the story: Washington Irving was born in New York City in 1783 and became one of the first American authors to win fame in Europe. He wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow while living in England, and it appeared in 1820 in his collection called The Sketch Book. The tale is set in the Hudson Valley, on the eastern shore of the river near the village of Tarrytown, where Dutch families had farmed for generations. There the lanky, superstitious schoolmaster Ichabod Crane courts the wealthy Katrina Van Tassel, faces his rival Brom Bones, and rides home through the haunted woods at midnight, where the Headless Horseman is said to ride. In Irving’s story the horseman is the ghost of a German soldier whose head was lost to a cannonball in the Revolutionary War. The channel’s short introduction at the start of this video, shown as text over the painting, gives this background before the reading begins.
