Israel marks three years since Hamas-led 7 October 2023 attacks | BBC News

Published

on

As Israel marks the third anniversary of the 7 October Hamas attacks, the BBC has visited residents of kibbutz Nir Oz – one of the worst hit places.

Sitting just a mile (1.6km) from the Gaza border, 41 Nir Oz residents and foreign workers were killed along with six people who had fled to the kibbutz from a party nearby. Seventy-six people from the kibbutz were kidnapped to Gaza, including nine bodies. Fourteen of those hostages were taken alive and killed in captivity.

During the October 7 attack, about 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage. The ensuing war between Israel and Hamas has killed more than 74,200 people in Gaza according to the Hamas-run health ministry – whose overall figures are seen as accurate by the UN.

What do the Democratic Socialists of America believe in? | BBC Americast

Published

Abolish ICE? Abolish borders, No prisons? The co-chair of the DSA speaks to us about what the party really stands for and whether they can persuade undecided Americans to vote for them.

The Democratic Socialists of America can count some of the country’s most high-profile politicians in its ranks, such as Bernie Sanders, Zohran Mamdani and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Until recently, the organisation had only a few thousand members and sat on the fringes of US politics.

But since the rise of Donald Trump and opponents like Bernie Sanders, the DSA has grown into a nationwide force that’s turning the Democratic Party on its head as it prepares to choose a new leader for the party ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

In today’s episode, Justin speaks to the DSA’s national co-chair Ashik Siddique about their vision for the country, including on housing, healthcare as well as Ukraine, Israel and Gaza. What do they really stand for, and could they one day end up taking over the Democratic Party?

Counterfeit products are being harder to spot and easier to find.

Online fakes and so-called dupes can sit just a few taps or clicks away from the real thing.

But while the products might give themselves away, the people selling them are harder to catch.

BBC Tech Now’s Ammie Sekhon explores the tech being deployed by one firm in Edinburgh, Scotland, to identify and remove counterfeit products online.

Christa Pike ‘angry and confused’ after failed execution, her lawyer says | BBC News

Published

on

Following an emergency court hearing on Wednesday, Christa Pike’s lawyers said preserving evidence from her failed execution was just the first step in a long legal battle after the 50-year-old death row inmate survived an execution attempt last week.

The judge ordered the state to preserve a broad range of physical evidence such as IVs and syringes – as well as all communications and surveillance video.

Her lawyers said it was necessary for transparency – and that the public should not simply take the state’s word about what happened.

The night before Pike woke up and began speaking, her lawyers said they believed she was brain dead and were told life support would be removed the next day.

She woke up “angry and confused”, they said, asking “where am I?”.

Her recovery, they added, will be a long road. It’s unclear if she’ll regain function of her arms which they say are extremely swollen.
