In one country, 48.9 percent of adults use tobacco. Worldwide it’s 19.2 percent, down from one adult in three in 2000.
WHO counts everyone aged 15 and over who smokes or chews tobacco.

In under three minutes, Chloe walks the globe:
• Nigeria: 3 percent, and fewer than one woman in two hundred.
• The United States: 15.2 percent, down from 38.6 in 2000.
• India: 21.9 percent, down from 55.7 in 2000.
• China: 22.7 percent, but 44 percent of men and only about one woman in a hundred.
• France: 33.6 percent, with women almost level with men. Europe has the highest tobacco use of any WHO region.
• Myanmar: 42.5 percent, down from 65.5 in 2000. One of the top two went up while most of the world cut back.
