Vampire: the Masquerade – Non-threatening evil antagonists for authentic societal horror chronicles
In this episode we’re exploring a type of character I like to call the “non-threatening” evil antagonist, which is based on a real abuser archetype (the sadist) and brought into the context of Vampire: the Masquerade, with suggestions on how to run this silent, discreet monster.
We’re used to villains having clear goals, grandiose evil plans and, of course, a memorable evil laugh, presenting as outsiders to the community they want to conquer/enslave/destroy out of revenge, greed, fear etc. but… in actuality, evil people frequently pass for valuable members of the communities they supposedly belong to. They don’t actively present as outcasts or outsiders, but rather, they seem pretty normal, nice even. The only ones who know them for who they really are… are their helpless, voiceless victims. They know exactly how to “play the system” to get what they want, they have a way of keeping up appearances as valuable, caring people, (since they are very manipulative) and some are so rich and influential that bringing them to justice after their crimes are discovered is a prolonged, resource-draining and exhausting process, which sometimes (often) ends in their favor, allowing them to walk free.
As much as I like my Call of Cthulhu and Liches and all that supernatural horror, I really think the greatest horror we will ever know is human cruelty. The worst monsters I’ve ever heard about didn’t want to take over the universe, or turn everyone into zombies, rather… they just found gratification and pleasure in hurting others. They used others as toys to break and abuse as they saw fit. They used any tool imaginable to keep themselves in power. You want to run an authentic, gut-wrenching horror game?
