กลุ่มนักศึกษาในฝรั่งเศสรวมตัวกันบนท้องถนนในกรุงปารีสเมื่อวันพฤหัสบดี หลังได้รับอนุญาตให้จัดการประท้วงได้ในนาทีสุดท้าย หลังจากที่ก่อนหน้านี้การประท้วงดังกล่าวถูกสั่งห้ามไปแล้ว

ผู้ประท้วงมารวมตัวกันท่ามกลางการดูแลอย่างเข้มงวดของเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจ โดยมีการตะโกนคำขวัญและชูป้ายวิพากษ์วิจารณ์รัฐบาล ป้ายหนึ่งมีข้อความว่า “ลงโทษจำคุกคนที่ทำลายสิ่งของหรือ? แล้วเมื่อไหร่จะมีการลงโทษจำคุกคนที่ทำลายชีวิตผู้คนบ้าง?”

ทางด้าน “เลา” นักศึกษาคนหนึ่งที่เข้าร่วมการชุมนุมกล่าวว่า“เราต้องไม่ยอมแพ้ เพราะในตอนนี้ไม่มีใครรับฟังเรา เราจะเดินหน้าต่อไปจนกว่าเสียงของเราจะได้รับการรับฟัง”

เธอกล่าวว่ากลุ่มผู้ประท้วงตระหนักดีว่าอาจต้องเผชิญกับความรุนแรง แต่ก็ไม่ควรปล่อยให้ความกลัวเข้ามาครอบงำ ส่วนผู้ประท้วงอีกคนหนึ่งกล่าวกับ ตำรวจว่า ทางการมี “ความรับผิดชอบอย่างยิ่ง” ในการป้องกันไม่ให้สถานการณ์บานปลาย

ทั้งนี้ ประธานาธิบดีเอ็มมานูเอล มาครง ของฝรั่งเศส กล่าวเมื่อวันพฤหัสบดีว่า การประท้วงที่ “ไม่ชอบด้วยกฎหมาย” จะถูกสั่งห้ามในช่วงไม่กี่วันข้างหน้า พร้อมทั้งกล่าวโทษกลุ่มหัวรุนแรงฝ่ายซ้ายและกลุ่มผู้ก่อความไม่สงบว่าเป็นผู้อยู่เบื้องหลังเหตุจลาจลและการปล้นสะดมเมื่อสุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา

โดยเมื่อวันที่ 17 ตุลาคมที่ผ่านมา ฝรั่งเศสเผชิญกับเหตุความไม่สงบในเขตเมืองครั้งเลวร้ายที่สุดในรอบหลายปี ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นควบคู่ไปกับการประท้วงทั่วประเทศ เหตุการณ์นี้เผยให้เห็นถึงความโกรธเคืองอย่างรุนแรงของสาธารณชน และก่อให้เกิดคำถามเกี่ยวกับขีดความสามารถของหน่วยงานความมั่นคงในการรักษาความสงบเรียบร้อย

เหตุความไม่สงบครั้งนี้สะท้อนให้เห็นถึงปัญหาที่หยั่งรากลึกในฝรั่งเศส ทั้งราคาพลังงานที่พุ่งสูงขึ้น แรงกดดันต่อค่าใช้จ่ายในครัวเรือน และความกังวลเกี่ยวกับบริการสาธารณะที่เสื่อมโทรมลง ซึ่งทั้งหมดนี้ได้กลายเป็นเชื้อเพลิงที่เพิ่มความคับข้องใจให้กับกลุ่มแรงงานและคนรุ่นใหม่

ขณะเดียวกัน เจ้าของร้านขายอุปกรณ์ป้องกันตัวแห่งหนึ่งในใจกลางกรุงปารีสเปิดเผยว่า ยอดขายสเปรย์พริกไทยที่ร้านของเขาเพิ่มสูงขึ้นนับตั้งแต่เกิดเหตุความไม่สงบเมื่อสุดสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา ท่ามกลางกระแสการนัดชุมนุมประท้วงเพิ่มเติมในวันเสาร์นี้ 24 ตุลาคม

ในใจกลางกรุงปารีส อีฟส์ โกเล็ตตี เจ้าของร้านขายปืน “ลามูร์-เรอ-รี เดอ ลา บูร์ซ” (L’Armurerie de la Bourse) กล่าวกับสำนักข่าวรอยเตอร์ว่า สเปรย์พริกไทยเป็นหนึ่งในสินค้าที่ขายดีที่สุดของร้าน โดยตามกฎหมายฝรั่งเศส ผลิตภัณฑ์ดังกล่าวสามารถนำไปใช้เพื่อการป้องกันตัวเท่านั้น

แม้ว่าประชาชนหลายแสนคนจะออกมาเดินขบวนอย่างสงบ แต่ก็มีเหตุการณ์อาคารที่ทำการเทศบาลถูกวางเพลิง ร้านค้าถูกปล้นสะดม และอาคารต่าง ๆ ถูกพ่นสีสเปรย์ ขณะที่กลุ่มผู้ก่อความรุนแรงบางกลุ่มได้ปะทะกับเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจในหลายเมืองทั่วประเทศ
