Ungaro was born in 1933 in Aix-en-Provence, France, to Italian parents who had escaped Mussolini’s fascist rule in the 1920s.
Ungaro, the second oldest of six sons, is said to have learnt to sew on a Singer machine when he was five years old, his tailoring education commencing at his father Cosimo Ungaro’s clothing store.
In 1955, Ungaro was 22 years old when he relocated to Paris’s bohemian Montparnasse neighborhood.
According to industry stories, Ungaro was suggested to Balenciaga and employed as an assistant to the famed couturier a year later, with the support of fellow budding talent Courrèges.
Ungaro worked for Balenciaga in his twenties, advancing to the post of chief assistant.
