In the early 1950s, a legal truck sleeper berth only had to be 18 inches high and 18 inches wide, which is narrower than a casket. Long-haul truckers slept in these “coffin sleepers” through blizzards, beside engines they couldn’t shut off and heaters that burned gasoline.

This documentary goes inside the 1950s sleeper berth: why truckers slept in their rigs, the strange beds built into trucks like the Kenworth “Cab Beside Engine,” the engines that idled all night to keep their blocks from cracking, the invisible danger of carbon monoxide, the “bennies” that kept drivers awake, the deadly blizzards of 1949 and 1952, and the all-night cafés that kept drivers going, ending at Little America, Wyoming.

If your father, grandfather or you drove those roads, tell us your story in the comments.
