US President, Donald Trump, has said he will offer every adult American $5,000 (£3,700) if the Republican party wins the midterms.

President Trump gave no detail on how it would work or how he would fund it. Speaking at the party’s first-ever convention in the middle of a US presidential term. He also said that the country’s war with Iran would not end until after the midterms. James is joined by Caitriona Perry and Faisal Islam to unpack these latest statements.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has won a decisive victory in Germany’s eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, far ahead of mainstream rivals.

But preliminary results show it has fallen short of an outright majority needed to govern alone, with 43.8% of the vote to the conservative CDU’s 17.2%, and tricky negotiations on who will run the state lie ahead.

AfD’s charismatic leader in the state, Ulrich Siegmund, said it was “sensational” and the party had won a mandate to govern.

No far-right party has controlled a German state since World War Two, and governing at state level would mean powers over policing, local education and culture.

The judge in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial has declared a mistrial after jurors said they could not reach a unanimous verdict on whether she was criminally responsible when she strangled her three young children. The ruling, reached after seven days of deliberations, leaves the case unresolved and allows prosecutors to try Clancy again.

The final day of the trial took a dramatic turn when the judge gave Clancy’s attorney a chance to appeal the mistrial order. Her lawyer was angry that a note from the jury had suggested that a single juror wouldn’t follow the court’s instructions about reasonable doubt. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ultimately denied the appeal.

Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, doesn’t deny strangling her children in the basement of their home in 2023. Clancy’s legal team has argued that postpartum psychosis led to her actions, while prosecutors say she knew what she was doing.
