What did President Putin and President Trump discuss in their call? | BBC Newscast

Published

on

We look at big changes to the benefits system which the UK government say aim to save ÂŁ5bn a year by 2030.

They were announced in the House of Commons by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall who said the changes would create a more “pro-work system”. However, charities and some Labour MPs are worried benefit cuts will push disabled people into poverty. Alex and James talk through the changes with Chris, and then are joined by the pensions minister Torsten Bell.

And, President Putin has agreed to halt strikes on Ukraine energy targets for 30 days after a call with President Trump. The two men spoke for around 90 minutes, and fresh Ukraine peace talks will also begin in the Middle East immediately, the White House says. Alex and James are joined by Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on EU leaders to provide fighter jets and arms for the war against Russia, on his second trip abroad since the war began.

“We have to enhance the dynamics of our co-operation, we have to do it faster than the aggressor,” President Zelensky said.

He was earlier given a standing ovation at the European Parliament in Brussels.

Several EU leaders have already stressed that a decision on warplanes would be a collective move.

White House hits back at Amazon’s ‘plan’ to show tariff price rises | BBC News

Published

on

The White House has hit back against a reported plan by Amazon to detail the price impact of President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs to its customers, calling it a “hostile” political act.

Amazon told the Washington Post it had looked into itemising the costs for customers using Amazon Haul, a low-cost site it launched in the US last year to compete with Shein and Temu.

But it denied such a move had been under consideration for its primary e-commerce platform.

At a press conference marking the president’s 100 days in office, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she had discussed Amazon’s reported move with the president and claimed it represented “another reason why Americans should buy American”.

Trump has ramped up tariffs since re-entering office in January, measures he argues will boost manufacturing and raise tax revenue for the US.
