Excess death figures show thousands more Covid fatalities in England than official record – BBC News
The government’s official figures show more than 50,000 people have died with Covid-19 in the UK. However another measure – the excess death figures – suggest that more than 71,000 people have died from the virus.
Excess deaths is the difference between deaths this year – and the average number over the past 5 years.
The latest figures also underline the differences across the UK during this second wave of the pandemic, with north-west England recording over a third more deaths than usual, while London has seen no difference at all.

The Iran War Today looks at tit for tat US and Iranian strikes in the Gulf region as the conflict reaches its 99th day.
The Lebanese army says several of its troops have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on a military vehicle in the south of the country.
And the row has spilled over onto the World Cup. Iran has accused the US of discriminatory treatment and of violating its obligations as a World Cup host for refusing visas to some of its football team’s delegation.
