Biden allows Ukraine to hit some targets in Russia with US weapons | BBC News
US President Joe Biden has given Ukraine permission to use American-supplied weapons to strike targets in Russia, but only near the Kharkiv region, US officials have said.
One official said his team had been directed to ensure Ukraine was able to use US weapons for “counter-fire purposes” to “hit back at Russian forces hitting them or preparing to hit them”.
Russian forces have made gains in the north-eastern Kharkiv region in recent weeks after a surprise offensive in the area, close to the border with Russia.
European leaders and the UK had called for restrictions on the use of such weapons to be relaxed, despite concerns that such a development could further escalate the conflict.
President Vladimir Putin warned that attacks by Ukraine on Russia with Western missiles risked triggering a wider war.

President Volodymr Zelensky has appealed to Germany to supply Ukraine with tanks, as leaders meet to discuss further aid.
Defence leaders from a number of Nato members are meeting at the US air base in Ramstein, Germany to discuss sending further aid ahead of an anticipated Spring offensive by Russia.
Germany is under increasing pressure from other countries to supply its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, as the UK prepares to send a dozen Challenger 2 tanks.
“If you have Leopard [tanks], then give them to us, these leopards won’t go through Russia. We’re defending ourselves.”, he told public TV in Germany.

The US and Iran have exchanged the largest number of strikes in weeks – after Iran retaliated to American attacks by launching strikes against US assets across the Middle East.
Iran says one US strike hit a wedding celebration in the south of the county, killing four people including one child.

Summer 2026 was the UK’s hottest on record, according to provisional data from the Met Office.
Figures for the months of June, July and August show that the average mean temperature – which includes day and overnight temperatures – was 16.5C, the warmest on record in a dataset going back to 1884.
The highest temperature recorded this summer was 38.1C (100.6F) at Kew Gardens in London on 13 August.
At a more regional level, England, Wales and Northern Ireland also broke their respective mean temperature records for summer, while Scotland reported its joint-sixth warmest summer on record.
