Original Daily Mirror Announcing The Sinking Of The Titanic Dated April 16th 1912
This is the actual Daily Mirror Morning Journal from April 16th 1912.
It has 8 pages with a picture and editorial to the front page with headline
Pages 2 and 3 contain articles relating to the Titanic, her voyage, and communications etc.
Pages 5 and 6 show a pictorial display of Captain Smith, some of the prominent Passengers and pictures of some of the facilities onboard
Pages 6 and 7 deal with other news of the day, “This Mornings Gossip” and various adverts including a cure for “Freckle Face”
Page 8 with sport, Blackburn beat Oldham Athletic and look likely to win the Championship, Derby drew 1-1 at Fulham, and Heart of Midlothian beat Glasgow Rangers 2-1.
Also there are articles on crime and deaths.
The RMS Titanic sank in the early morning hours of 15 April 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean, four days into the ship’s maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. The largest ocean liner in service at the time, Titanic had an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at around 23:40 (ship’s time)[a] on Sunday, 14 April 1912. Her sinking two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (ship’s time; 05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April, resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime marine disasters in history.
It is of course yellowed with age, and there are some ring marks and discolouration to the back page from what looks like tea cups being placed on it.
I doubt there are many of us who never heard about the story of the Titanic. The most imposing passenger liner of its day back in 1912.
The drama of this luxurious liner owned by the White Star Line has been depicted in many films, novels and history books alike.
The ocean liner carried some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere throughout Europe, who were seeking a new life in the United States.
For this purpose we will use a copy of the Daily Mirror printed Tuesday, 16th of April, the morning after the disaster. This newspapers is of course for sale on sallyantiques.co.uk along with many other Titanic related items.
The first page of the newspaper reads: Disaster to the Titanic: World’s largest ship collides with an iceberg in the Atlantic during her maiden voyage.
It is interesting to remark the fact that at the time the media had no idea about the scale of the disaster.
This is reflected on the second page title reading: “Every one on board world’s greatest liner safe after collision with iceberg in Atlantic Ocean.” Furthermore it was believed at the time that the Titanic was towed to New York by the Allan Liner. This news helped reassuring the family of the crew members who gathered in small groups on the Southampton keys on the morning of 16th that their loved ones are safe.
To understand what a novelty this ship was back in its day I will read you few more lines form it’s newspaper description:
One can go for a two mile walk on the Titanic without going over the same point twice.” Compared with our liners today this is merely a joke, but for that era it was the best the world could offer.
We also find out the quantity of food supplies on board and that it packs 21,000 dishes and plates, being able to serve food to 600 people at one time.
It appears that the most expensive ticket on the ship was £870 (in today’s money £100,000) and the cheapest was £7 15s (£807).
An interesting figure is a calculation of the fortune of the richest people aboard. It seems that the overall value of a handful of the passengers exceeded £50,000,000 at the time, the wealthiest two having a fortune in excess of £10 million (over £1,1 billion in today’s money).
The list of facts can continue of course but we will let you find out more if you wish to do so.
One more interesting thing is the middle print speed which depicts a number of images with the Titanic in port and the pictures of the famous people on board. The captain takes the central spot, of course.
Beside the Titanic story you can get a glimpse of the world of the 1912, as the rest of the newspaper’s columns, articles, advertising, humour, etc. offer the reader a nice portrait of a world long gone.
