New Novavax vaccine is “highly effective” against UK Covid variant – BBC News

Published

on

A fourth vaccine could be approved shortly in the UK after trials showed it was particularly effective against the UK coronavirus variant.

Novavax is a US vaccine being produced in the UK on Teeside. The British government has 60 million doses on order.

Meanwhile the UK has insisted that existing vaccine supplies won’t be interrupted despite a continuing row between AstraZeneca and the European Union over shortages.

Almost seven and a half million people have now had at least one dose of the vaccine in the UK – that’s far higher than countries across the EU.

The row was sparked when AstraZeneca said it wouldn’t be able to deliver all the doses promised to the EU by March.

The EU has called for some of the vaccines made in the UK to be diverted and warned it could resort to legal action.

France, Portugal and Germany are just some of the EU member states struggling to get hold of enough vaccine supplies. Vaccinations are having to be postponed before the roll out has really begun.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by medical editor Fergus Walsh and by Jenny Hill in Germany.

Explosions and gunfire as armed groups launch co-ordinated attacks across Mali | BBC News

Published

Explosions and sustained gunfire have been reported in Mali’s capital, Bamako, as armed groups launch apparently co-ordinated attacks across the country.

The military said in a statement on Saturday that “fighting is ongoing”, adding “our defence and security forces are currently engaged in repelling the attackers”.

Witnesses have told news agency Reuters of explosions and gunfire around Kati, home to a major military base outside the capital. Soldiers have been deployed to block off roads in the area.

There are also reports of attacks in Gao and Kidal in the north, and Sevare in central Mali, in what one analyst described as the largest jihadist attack in years.

US President Donald Trump said he will extend the ceasefire with Iran until talks between the two countries have progressed.

He also said the blockade of Iranian ports will also continue until Tehran presents a “unified proposal”.

The status of the US-Iran talks had been unclear with the current ceasefire previously due to expire this week.

The BBC’s chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet is reporting from Tehran on condition that none of her material is used on the BBC’s Persian Service. These restrictions apply to all international media organisations operating in Iran.

Antisemitic attacks: Are teenagers being recruited to firebomb Jewish sites? | BBC News

Published

on

A series of antisemitic attacks have targeted Jewish sites across the UK – from petrol bombs thrown at synagogues to Jewish charity ambulances set on fire.

A group named Harakat Ashab al‑Yamin al‑Islamia has claimed responsibility online. Counter‑terrorism police are now investigating potential links to Iran. But what do we know about who’s behind this seemingly co-ordinated effort?

This investigation looks at why many of those charged over the attacks are teenagers, and asks if foreign states are paying local criminals to carry them out.

A man has been charged with attempting to assassinate US President Donald Trump after a shooting occurred during the White House correspondents’ dinner.

Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California, allegedly crossed multiple state lines in an attempt to assassinate the president, according to federal prosecutor Jocelyn Ballantine.

In an interview after the shooting, Trump said he was “not worried” during the shooting – although authorities believe the president and other senior government figures were targets.
