Several people are trapped inside a shopping centre after a strong earthquake hit south-west Japan, officials say.

Some local media reports that there was an explosion at the Aeon Mall in Kumamoto, following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake.

The quake hit inland on Kyushu island at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT), with more than 150,000 people being told to move to evacuation shelters. There was a brief tsunami warning that was lifted within the hour.

Emergency services said “many people” were trapped inside the Aeon Mall in the Kumamoto region.

President Donald Trump has paused attacks on Iran for the third night in a row to give diplomacy more time, the US ambassador to the UN said.

An Iranian army spokesperson said on Sunday that Tehran had halted “retaliatory” attacks in the region in response. The pause follows nearly two weeks of daily US strikes and tit-for-tat attacks, effectively unravelling the ceasefire struck in June.

Meanwhile, Iran and Oman held several rounds of technical talks in Tehran on Friday and Saturday to discuss management of the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.

Elsewhere, Ukraine has dismissed Iranian threats of retaliation, following Kyiv’s targeting of an Iranian cargo vessel in the Caspian Sea on Saturday.

It’s the world’s biggest study of potential treatments, involves thousands of patients. Five drugs are being studied, including treatments currently used for malaria and HiV.

In an exclusive BBC investigation, four women have accused Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto of criminal sexual conduct. The woman say the alleged offences took place when they were teenagers.

After this story was published, Leto said in a statement released by his representatives to the BBC: “I have never sexually assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false”.

Thousands have gathered again in the Indian capital Delhi a day after a police crackdown on supporters of India’s Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led movement seeking education reforms and resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Tens of thousands of young men and women had turned up for Monday’s protest and tried to march on parliament, defying a police ban.

Central Delhi witnessed overwhelming violence, with at least 60 protesters wounded when police used batons and tear gas on them. Policemen also tore down the stage and makeshift tents at the main protest venue.

Police said 118 of their personnel were also injured and 70 protesters have been detained.
