From the California Gold Rush and the brutal working conditions of nineteenth-century

We travel through World War II, when denim became associated with American defense workers and servicemen; into 1950s Hollywood, where Marlon Brando and James Dean helped transform jeans into the clothing of rebellion; and into the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, where denim became a powerful visual symbol of solidarity and working-class identity.

We also explore the surprising story of blue jeans behind the Iron Curtain, including their extraordinary demand in Eastern Europe and the controversial underground trade in genuine American denim. Finally, we arrive at the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, where blue jeans appeared in the visual landscape of one of the most important moments of the twentieth century.

This is more than the history of Levi’s.
It is the story of how a simple pair of work trousers became a global language of identity, freedom, rebellion, work, fashion, and memory.
