Climate change: ‘Uncharted territory’ fears after record hot March | BBC News

Published

on

Climate change could move “into uncharted territory” if temperatures don’t fall by the end of the year, a leading scientist has told the BBC.

The warning came as data showed last month was the world’s warmest March on record, extending the run of monthly temperature records to 10 in a row.

It’s fuelled concerns among some that the world could be tipping into a new phase of even faster climate change.

A weather system called El Niño is behind some of the recent heat.

Botswana’s Elephant Hunting Dilemma – BBC News

Published

on

Hunting was banned under President Khama and Botswana was known for a zero-tolerance approach to poachers.

It was reported that in 2015 alone 30 Namibians, 22 Zimbabweans and an unknown number of Zambians were shot on suspicion of poaching.

Elephants can be very destructive when they encroach on to farmland and move though villages – destroying crops and sometimes killing people. Many rural communities believe the number of elephants is increasing, even though there is no evidence of this from scientific surveys.

But their “range” – how far the elephants travel – is expanding for a number of different reasons and that is increasing conflict between wildlife and humans. Many people believe this worsened after hunting was banned in 2013, and want it to be re-introduced.

The government has to balance lifting the hunting ban to win votes against the impact it may have on Botswana’s international reputation as a luxury safari destination.

Who just hacked Ukraine and Russia’s emergency alert apps? | BBC News

Published

on

Ukraine and Russia have both said air alert apps were hacked after fake messages warning of attacks, including nuclear, were sent to users.

Ukraine’s app sent red-level air raid warnings across the country, with additional warnings of radiation, chemical attacks, and street fighting sent to some residents in areas including Kyiv.

A few hours later, Russian authorities said a similar app was hacked after fake alerts, some of which contained foul language, were triggered.
