Nepal death toll crosses 1,000 as rescuers find workers trapped in mud-filled tunnels | BBC News

Published

on

The death toll in Nepal from devastating floods on the border with Tibet has crossed 1,000, according to the country’s disaster agency.

More than 3,900 people remain missing – of whom more than 600 are workers believed to be trapped in a vast network of mud-filled tunnels at hydropower sites along Trishuli River.

Engineers have been pumping air into the tunnels – and while a team did manage to gain entry to one of them, it withdrew after finding no-one there.

The rescue operation is being spearheaded by an international team made up of Chinese and Nepalese military personnel, while experts from India, Korea and Australia are also involved.

Why have two Reform UK officials stood down after an undercover investigation? | BBC Newscast

Published

on

Two senior officials stood down from Reform UK after a Channel 4 News report prompted the party to investigate claims about funding.

Nigel Farage’s senior aide Dan Jukes and Reform’s head of policy James Orr have both stood down pending the outcome of the internal probe. The undercover filming was done by Verbatim Investigations and broadcast by Channel 4 News. Reform UK has denied wrongdoing and Nigel Farage describes the operation as entrapment.

The footage appears to show an attempt to secure funding from someone they believed to be a foreign donor. Electoral law prohibits UK political parties from receiving financial contributions from people who can’t vote here. Reform denies any wrongdoing and says it has “been the target of a hoax perpetuated by foreign-funded climate change activists”. Adam and Chris discuss.

Uber launches UK’s first robotaxis in London | BBC News

Published

on

Londoners are able to hail the UK’s first robotaxis – as Uber today becomes the first company to launch a self-driving minicab.

Initially, it only has 15 autonomous vehicles with a licence to operate in the city, and each one must have a human safety driver behind the wheel ready to take control if anything goes wrong.

Uber said it surveyed London-based customers via the app and more than 100,000 said they would choose a self-driving taxi if one was available, despite incidents of driverless rides malfunctioning in US cities where they already operate.
